South Puget Sound Community College is currently accepting applications for a part time, non-permanent Instruction and Classroom Technician 2 to support the Horticulture Technology Department. This position is a 69 hour per month maximum position for nine months between the middle of September and the middle of June. This recruitment is open to all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications stated below. Applications received by the closing date will be used to fill Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 vacancies at the college which may occur over the next six months.
Definition: Performs professional/technical instructional support involving the use of scientific, technical, and/or academic knowledge, materials, and techniques. Positions provide instructional support to vocational programs and science-related undergraduate courses requiring knowledge of a scientific discipline. Responsibilities typically include assisting faculty in the development of programs of instruction. Duties require limited design/development work such as modifying and/or adapting existing experiments and demonstrations, or implementing new experiments or demonstrations using standard techniques and procedures.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Assist instructors with lecture and laboratory material; conduct lab or lecture demonstrations; confer with instructor in establishing and developing assignments and schedules for labs.
· Maintain greenhouse equipment, supplies and surrounding areas; supervise growth and maintenance of plants, trees and flowers in conjunction with class projects as assigned.
· Advise instructors regarding design of student lab exercises to develop key knowledge and competencies in courses and advise on potential problems with existing exercises.
· Monitor laboratories and greenhouse to ensure compliance with safety policy; assist in the development of safe laboratory procedures; prepare chemicals for disposal within approved safety protocols and provide appropriate safety training within limits of qualifications.
· Provide assistance to the Agriculture/Horticulture department and students by advising on related issues and organize instructional materials in classroom and resource center.
· Maintain compliance with campus waste management policies; complete risk assessment of greenhouse, classrooms, and other areas to ensure student safety.
· Maintain records, contracts, and paperwork including field trip permissions and travel; complete and maintain inventory of laboratory and greenhouse equipment, supplies; orders and stocks supplies appropriately for planned instructional activities.
· Monitor status of greenhouse and schedule maintenance with Facilities Services.
· Assists and advises students in laboratory assignments or in discipline subject matter; writes, edits or modifies laboratory handouts or manuals; modifies experiments; advises instructors of potential problems with existing programs.
· Operates and performs routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; instructs students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of equipment.
· Estimates quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed; orders equipment and supplies for the program; follows through with purchasing department or procurement of supplies; maintains adequate stock levels.
· Performs other work as required.
· May teach laboratory portion of selected classes.
· May direct the work of others.
Desirable Qualifications:
· Education and experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture/Landscape Management or Associates Degree Horticulture/Landscape Management and 2 yrs work experience in the field or other equivalent education/experience.
· Work experience in the field of Horticulture/Landscaping.
· Certifications:
  • Pesticide Applicator’s License (or be able to obtain one within 3 months) o
  • Valid certification in CPR and First Aid. (or be able to obtain one within 3 months) 
  • Also desirable: Certified Landscape Technician, Certified Professional Horticulturist etc., and/or willingness to study on one’s own time for such certifications.
· Interpersonal Communication and Problem Solving Skills: effectively builds and maintains strong positive relationships with a variety of diverse people and uses intelligence, common sense, research skills, and tenacity to solve difficult or complicated challenges.
· Coordination and Organization Skills: effectively organizes, prioritizes, delegates, and manages workflow to meet project deadlines and ensure smooth operations of the department.
· Critical Analysis Skills: exhibits ability to identify issues and offer alternative solutions; interprets regulations and policies Working Conditions:
· Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule.
· Possession of a valid driver’s license and be able to pass Passenger Van Certification (Driving the Van II).
· Ability to read, write, and speak English.
· Ability and willingness to effectively manage multiple tasks with competing priorities.
· Willingness to work in varied weather conditions and at sites off campus (field trips).
Non-permanent employees under the provisions of WAC 357-19-435 are only authorized to work up to a maximum of 1050 hours in any twelve (12) consecutive- month period from the original date of hire. Employment with the college could end any time during the 1050 hour period as measured from the original date of hire. All Non-permanent employees who work more than 350 hours during any consecutive 12-month period will be covered by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement and union security. At that time, the employer will furnish the employee with a dues authorization form for payroll deduction of union dues.
