Spawner Survey Interns
The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group is seeking interns to assit with salmon spawner surveys from October 2011 through January 2012. This is a volunteer position, but mileage to and from the work sites in Mount Vernon will be reimbursed. Hours/work days are flexible, but the intern is expected to commit to montoring at least 2 sites (6-8 hours per week minimum). The spawner survey intern assists SFEG staff in implementing the spawner survey program program for selected restoration sites. The intern will participate in SFEG spawner survey workshop, receive training in how to identify adult salmon species and redds, conduct weekly surveys on one or more streams, and assist with data entry, analysis, and reporting. This program documents salmon spawning in proposed and completed restoration sites. This information is useful in understanding the effectiveness of restoration efforts and is used by WDFW for escapement forecasting. The intern works with SFEG field staff and other volunteers to carry out this work.

The IsoLab is a collaborative facility specializing in the analysis of light stable isotopes. The focus is the use of stable isotopes of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur from ice, rock, and atmospheric samples to help elucidate paleo and modern-day environments. The lab has an outstanding opportunity for an Undergraduate Research Assistant. This individual will initially be responsible for and assist with all aspects of sample preparation. Routine duties include water sample preparation, carbonate sample preparation, and glassware preparation. The successful candidate will work with and be trained by the laboratory manager and collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students, post doctoral associates, and principal investigators. The schedule is flexible around course work. This position will provide excellent laboratory experience necessary for a scientific research career. A postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds (OWOW). The intern will be trained in the immediate office of the Assessment and Watershed Protection Division (AWPD). AWPD has a broad portfolio of programs, including: nonpoint source pollution control and the Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 319 Program; watershed planning and implementation; CWA Section 303(d) Impaired Waters List and Total Maximum Daily Load programs; and water quality monitoring and data storage. In addition, the AWPD immediate office supports EPA’s leadership role in the Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force, a state/federal collaborative effort to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. The Hypoxia Task Force members are the 12 Mississippi mainstem states and four federal agencies, in addition to EPA. The intern will be a member of AWPD’s Hypoxia Team. As part of the Hypoxia Team, the intern will be involved in a range of activities, which may include participating in face-to-face meetings and conference calls of the Hypoxia Task Force. Team activities could include: (1) planning and preparing for Coordinating Committee and Task Force calls and meetings; (2) preparing needed documents, and undertaking needed follow-up actions; and (3) coordinating within EPA and with Hypoxia Task Force federal and state member agencies on Task Force activities and related actions to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the Mississippi River Basin. The School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada) is a dynamic graduate school in which both social and natural scientists apply
multi-disciplinary approaches to research in resource and environmental management. The School has a substantial research and teaching program in Fisheries Science and Management ( www.rem.sfu.ca/fishgrp/index.html ). The School seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position in Fisheries
Science and Management, with a leading-edge senior candidate who will meet the criteria and qualify for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair ( www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/ ). We invite applications from Ph.D. scientists who have a strong quantitative background in fisheries science and management, simulation
modeling, and statistics. A research emphasis on wild Pacific salmon is desirable, but other research foci will also be considered. The successful candidate will have experience and demonstrated applied accomplishments in fisheries science and management, for example in:
(1) Applied fish ecology, conservation, population dynamics, fisheries oceanography, sampling design, effects of habitat change and management, or multi-species interactions; and/or
(2) Stock assessment, risk assessment and management, evaluation of management strategies or policies, ecosystem-based reference points and metrics, species at risk, or invasive species. Collaborative experience with one or more of government, industry, or non-government organizations will be an advantage. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses, supervise graduate students, and conduct research using multi-disciplinary approaches to fisheries science and management. Relevant teaching experience is desirable.
