CCFEG spans the diverse geographic and demographic area of North Central Washington (NCW). Our target audience includes anyone living, working, or recreating within the watersheds of NCW. Regional economic and environmental vitality depends on the health of our watersheds and fishery resources. Over the past century the waterways of NCW have been used for economic gain i.e. hydro power, agricultural, logging/log transport, municipal water, and other extractive/resource intensive activities. During the 20th century these activities were the driver behind economic growth and settlement patterns of the Columbia Basin. These practices also led to the listing of several fish species under the Endangered Species Act. The long term sustainability of water and aquatic resources were an afterthought. Now we must find implement more sustainable practices for the benefit of the local economy and the environment on which it depends. Our restoration projects are voluntary in nature, and have been through a rigorous technical and citizen review process.
The Washington Water Project of Trout Unlimited (TU), provides common sense, community based restoration and protection of Washington’s rivers and streams. Our work supports healthy ecosystems that can sustain both human and environmental needs well into the future for all NCW residents. The active involvement of our 15 Washington chapters contributed 16,500 hours in 2010, in activities ranging from hands-on stream restoration to environmental education activities for youth. The programs we have development and this project we have proposed in collaboration with CCFEG, will contribute to building long term support for sustainable solutions, changed practices and aid in our efforts for salmon recovery in NCW.
We will utilize the recently developed “Guide to Outreach and Education in the Wenatchee and Entiat Watersheds” document to help orient our Americorps member and to identify/support outreach and educational events and programs.
