The City of Tacoma's Office of Sustainability is seeking to hire part-time interns to provide support to the City of Tacoma's Sustainability Managers, Green Team, and subcommittees through research and development of sustainability policies, guidelines, and practices. Assist the city in achieving its sustainability goals and implement the 2008 Climate Action Plan strategies.
General tasks of these part-time positions (16-20 hours/week for 6 months) include:
Assist in the implementation of Sustainable Purchasing Policy, procedures, and guidelines. Research and development of Energy, Fuel, Waste, and Paper Reduction Programs and Campaigns. Develop and maintain Sustainability internet and intranet pages. Develop outreach materials and programming for residents and businesses, including website updates, social media, and other materials. Work with the Sustainable Tacoma Commission to research and develop policy and/or program recommendations for Management and City Council consideration. Work with Human Resources to develop sustainability training. Perform data gathering, entry and reporting. Gather data on City's resource consumption including energy, fuel, water, and paper usage.
The UW Tacoma Environmental Program is housed within Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. The Environmental Program offers the opportunity to complete either a BA in Environmental Studies or a BS in Environmental Science. Additionally, we offer a Minor in Environmental Studies, a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (co-administered by Urban Studies) and a Certificate in Restoration Ecology.

Biologists working on the Yakima Beaver Project will be live trapping and translocation nuisance beaver from urban/agricultural areas to a holding facility, and eventually releasing them into target watersheds for restoration purposes. Field crews are responsible for care and transport of the animals, and collecting and organizing field data. In addition these positions will work closely with private landowners, and cooperating agencies, throughout the duration of the project.

- Collect biological data on beavers (length, weight, sex, ear tag, PIT tag beavers). Safely handle and transport beavers from live-trap sites to holding facility and then into the final release sites. Feeding and upkeep of beavers.
Enter data, create maps, organize files and biological data and assist with report writing.

Sediment Quality Unit Supervisor - Aquatic Resources Division

This position oversees the agency’s Contaminated Sediments Program. This includes providing the agency with toxicological expertise through the review and evaluation of toxicological studies and technical data and renders professional analysis to agency management on the effects of contaminated sediments to human health and aquatic organisms. These analyses are used to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed cleanup plans to ensure the proprietary interests of the state are addressed.
This position also represents the agency on advisory committees, interagency task forces and other venues where toxicological expertise is required.

Position Description: Positions will be responsible for collecting field data for a forest stream hydrology study across eastern Washington. Candidates must have the proven capability to navigate by foot and vehicle in forested environments, and have experience collecting scientific data. Successful candidates will receive training and work either independently or small crews. Job conditions are strenuous and require applicants to be in excellent physical condition and capable of traversing steep forested terrain. Map reading skills, ability to interpret aerial photography and orienteering skills are key and will be used on a daily basis.
Qualifications: Applicants must have completed a college degree in hydrology, geology/geomorphology, geography, or other natural resource field or be actively seeking a degree in a listed scientific discipline. Successful applicants will have demonstrated knowledge and appreciation for following rigorous sampling methods and collecting scientific data. Specific knowledge of headwater sediment-transport processes and the ability to recognize the influence of sediment supply, flood events, mass wasting, and management on channel form is highly desirable.
Salary: $12.50 - $17.50 per hour plus overtime, depending on experience.

Project Fisheries Biologist 3
This is a project permanent position in the Wild Salmonid Production Evaluation Unit in the Fish Program. The duty station is in Port Angeles and the project is funded through June 30, 2013.
The position functions as the project manager for the Elwha Weir Project. This position supervises weir operation, analyzes data, and summarizes results in written and oral format. The Elwha Weir Project is part of a multi-agency effort to assess the abundance and survival of wild salmon and steelhead on the Elwha River and to evaluate the contributions of restoration strategies to ecosystem restoration. The position prepares annual and contractual reports describing study designs and project outcomes. This position reports to immediate supervisor and interacts with WDFW Region 6 staff as well as personnel from Tribal, Federal, and local agencies and the general public.
