Biologist (Watershed, stream, salmon, restoration) – South Fork Research, Inc. (Seattle/North Bend, WA)

South Fork Research is seeking a biologist with advanced data management skills to maintain and analyze physical and biological data collected as part of an intensively monitored watershed project studying the long-term effects of stream restoration on salmon habitat and salmon populations (Bridge Creek Intensively Monitoring Watershed, Integrated Status and Effectiveness Monitoring Program). The successful applicant will focus on the collection of field data for monitoring changes in vegetation along a heavily incised stream in eastern Oregon (Bridge Creek) that is being restored in concert with beaver activity and structure placements.  The incumbent will also maintain and update water temperature, climate, and groundwater data, including data collection, quality assurance, and summary in database formats. GIS data will be managed in geodatabases and maintained, updated, and documented as needed with metadata. Research Consultant – School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, UW (Seattle, WA)

Research is directed toward two main areas:  1) Characterizing the genetic basis of phenotypic diversity and genetic relatedness of aquatic organisms, primarily fish; 2) Understanding how nutritional environmental factors such as pH, water temperature, contaminants, food quality and quantity or other ecosystem variables alter the physiology and health of aquatic organisms by examining large scale changes in gene expression. Ecosystem Recovery Coordinator – Puget Sound Partnership (Tacoma, WA)

Project description: We are seeking an intern that will be a key member of a research team including scientists from the Northwest Fisheries Science Center and the University of Washington. Intern will assist us in the laboratory and field operations for a large scale project examining the fate and transport of terrestrial and marine derived nutrients and pathogens in shellfish growing areas in Puget Sound. We are using stable isotopes of Carbon and Nitrogen to distinguish diet composition of Pacific oysters. Intern duties will primarily consist of preparing biological samples for stable isotope analysis and data entry. Fieldwork will consist of collecting Pacific oysters from growing areas at low tide. There may be additional opportunities to assist with other projects depending on time constraints and the level of interest.

HCP Implementation Monitoring Biologist
