North Pacific Groundfish Observer

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree with a major in a natural science, such as fisheries or wildlife biology, marine biology, or a related field of biology (including general biology).
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours in applicable biological sciences.
  • At least one undergraduate course each in math and statistics.
  • Coursework or employment experience that emphasized the use of dichotomous (taxonomic) keys.
  • Computer skills necessary to work with standard database software and computer hardware.
Biologists hired by Alaskan Observers, Inc. (AOI) attend a three week training in either Seattle, Washington, or Anchorage, Alaska. Following training, North Pacific GroundfishObservers make an initial commitment to make two deployments of between 2 and 2 ½ months in length over a span of 5 to 6 months, and are guaranteed subsequent deployment opportunities and salary advances. Observers gather management data for the Government, living and working aboard U.S.-flagged commercial fishing vessels operating in the Bering Sea, North Pacific, and Gulf of Alaska.

Biologist, March 2011 West Coast Groundfish Observer Program – Alaskan Observers (Various West Coast Ports)

Alaskan Observers, Inc. (AOI) is currently recruiting biologists to enter training in March of 2011.


Description of Work:
This program provides observer coverage to vessels operating outside of the catch-share fishery on the West Coast. (You can find information about observer opportunities in the Trawl Catch Share fishery here)
The vessels operating in the West Coast Groundfish fishery range in size from 20 feet to approximately 75 feet. Observers will work on a variety of gear types, including longline, pot, and shrimp trawl. Trips will generally be one to five days in length. The project offers observers the opportunity to work twelve-month or longer contracts (as opposed to the typical three-month contract in the North Pacific). Observers can expect to be sampling at sea approximately 12 to 20 days per month, gathering fishing effort and location information, sampling for species composition, and collecting biological data from both prohibited and target species. While onshore observers can also expect to work on shoreside tasks which will include making dock rounds, entering and editing data, debriefing, performing safety reviews, and contacting vessels to be observed.

Under the direction of the ENR Director. Activities range from routine to moderately complex, requiring a greater level of judgment and initiative to determine proper approach or action to take in non-routine situations. An extensive knowledge of office organization including typical operating policies, procedures, and protocols, and administrative concepts, principles and accepted practices.

Metro Group LLC is seeking students to help carry out an energy efficiency program supported in part by Washington state utility companies. Tasks will include but are not limited to: learning and understanding rebate and incentives program from local utilities; creating teams to conduct sweeps of commercial utility properties and discover inefficient technology still in use; educating utility customers about opportunities for energy efficiency; and gaining valuable experience as an educator, environmental steward and consultant. There is a lot of autonomy in this position but the Program Site Supervisor is still accountable to the Mercer Slough Manager for the policies of Pacific Science Center, the integrity of the Mercer Slough and the deadlines and regulations of the City of Bellevue.
