POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Performs technical environmental monitoring, maintenance and operation tasks. An employee in this classification
performs relatively sophisticated tasks generally involving materials that may be considered hazardous due to
their chemical nature. Duties are conducted in a public service work environment. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of six months full-time experience in the operation of a
landfill gas system or hazardous waste collection and processing program; or Associate's degree or two-year
technical certification in hazardous materials, environmental science or environmental sciences and technology.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at time of appointment with maintenance
thereafter. Must obtain a 40-hour Personal Protection and Safety certificate and a Respiratory Protection
Certificate prior to completion of probation and maintain them thereafter. 
 
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Characteristics of landfill gas.
Safety rules and procedures relating to landfill gas and hazardous wastes.
Operational procedures for landfill gas systems.
Operating principles of various types of landfill gas monitoring instrumentation.
Mechanical and electrical equipment.
Record keeping procedures including some data entry on computers.
Toxicity and chemical properties of hazardous materials.
Department of Transportation shipping and packaging requirements for hazardous wastes.
Hazardous waste reduction techniques.
Installation and maintenance of landfill gas and environmental system components.
Characteristics and proper removal of refrigerants.
Keep complete, legible, and accurate records and logs.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Work independently.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Participate in a medical monitoring program.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Operate small hand and power tools; monitoring and refrigerant recovery equipment.
Operate motor vehicles as assigned.
Use respiratory and chemical protective equipment with no restrictions.
Relate well with the public.
Perform and interpret qualitative testing on unknown hazardous materials.
Ability to install and maintain landfill gas and environmental system components.

 
SELECTION PROCESS & SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their application packets, including resume and cover
letter, evaluated and scored for applicable education, training, and experience. It is the responsibility of the
applicant to carefully list all pertinent experience and training. Applicants must obtain a passing score to be
placed on the eligible list for interview and hiring consideration.

Appointment is subject to passing a background check and will include a pre-employment medical exam and drug
screen. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local 483An employee in this
position will be required to join the union within 30 days of hire. New employees must successfully complete a
nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
