Lead Camp Instructor- Seattle Aquarium

Reports to: Camp & Family Programs Coordinator
Status: Hourly – This is a temporary position lasting a maximum of 8 weeks.
Shift time; M-F. 8am-5pm.
Hours of Work:
Lead Camp Instructor position works and must be committed to the following weeks of camp.
Camp Staff Training: June, 18-22.
Camp Theme - Aquatic Artists - Session 1: July 23-27
Camp Theme -Ocean Odyssey - Session 1: July 9-13, Session 2: August 6-10, Session 3: August 13-17.
You will be allotted three, 40 hour weeks, for prep and post production June – August 2012.
Hours for all 8 weeks in total will be 40 hours per week.

About the Seattle Aquarium: The Seattle Aquarium is owned by the City of Seattle and under nonprofit management. The Aquarium currently serves over 825,000 visitors and 50,000 school children and their teachers annually. Guided by the mission of Inspiring Conservation of our Marine Environment, the Seattle Aquarium has a realistic plan for phased growth based on record-setting attendance, membership and fundraising growth, an energized Board of Directors and professional management. The current annual budget is $12 million.
Position Overview: The Education Assistant for Camp & Family Programs conducts two primary responsibilities; 1. Irregular staff support - substitute as a camp counselor and/or family program instructor and cover breaks when needed 2. Regular administrative support - produces consistent weekly reports and maintains records for summer fee based program offerings. Education Assistants must quickly establish and build positive relationships with summer program staff, volunteers, interns, campers, families & our partner programs. This allows the Education Assistant to easily integrate into any program position when necessary. Each day greatly varies. Willingness to adapt from office tasks to instructing classes with ages varying from infant to adult is essential.

Primary job functions:
Camp Lead Instructor will carry out the camp programs outlined schedule of all activities while leading staff counselors, high school volunteers and 24-30 campers per week, for 4 camp sessions.
o Aquatic Artists – Entering Grades 1-2. M-F, Camp Runs 9am-4pm Session 1: July 23-27.
o Ocean Odyssey – Entering Grades 3-4. M-F, Camp Runs 9am-4pm Session 1: July 9-13 Session 2: August 6-10 Session 3: August 13-17.
Camp Program Scheduled Outline.
o This year’s Aquatic Artists and Ocean Odyssey camp sessions will be outlined in detail and scheduled for the Camp Lead Instructor. It will be the Camp Lead Instructor’s job to execute the schedule as written and modify when appropriate with the input and approval of the Camp Coordinator.
Staffing Support for Camp Programs.
o Each camp session has a Camp Lead Instructor, who reports to the Camp & Family Programs Coordinator.
o Marine Summer Camp has an Education Assistant, for all our Camps and Family programs, who assist all Camp Lead Instructors and the Camp Coordinator with daily operations of camp.
o Camp Lead Instructors oversees the weekly operations of their assigned camp week along with supervising the camp session paid staff and volunteers.
o Each camp session has 2 paid camp counselors and 0-2 High School volunteers.
o You will assist in covering breaks daily for paid and volunteers camp counselors.
Camp Lead Instructor Tasks - include but are not limited to the following:
o Camp Lead Instructors interact with families, children, teens, adults and will are expected to engage professionally with all ages. Camp Lead Instructors may need to report daily incidents or interactions to Aquarium staff/volunteers and camp families. Professionalism, confidentiality, respect and quality communication are key.
o Camp Lead Instructors Greet families every day, sign in/out campers and make sure children are prepared for the day with all proper paperwork, lunch etc. and fields’ parents and guardians to the appropriate staff and program when applicable.
o Camp Lead Instructors are responsible for knowing all campers information as written on their Liability form. This includes medications needed at camp to photo releases and insures all information is carried out appropriately and remains confidential.
o Marine Summer Camp ventures on many field trips offsite. Be prepared to lead camp sessions on these varied types of field sites.
o Shopping and acquiring needed supplies for your camp sessions.
o Other camp program related projects as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:
Minimum of 2 years experience working with children and/or teens.
Minimum of 2 years experience working in an aquarium, zoo, environmental education center or similar institution required. Previous experience working in a camp setting preferred.
Educational background in Education, Child Development, Recreation, Environmental Science, or related field.
Experience working with diverse racial and socio-economic audiences.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent leadership abilities.
Strong organizational skills.
Demonstrated reliability, responsibility and enthusiasm.
Basic knowledge of group activities, games, team building initiatives or other environmental education related programming.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team player.
Be flexible in a rapidly changing work environment.
Knowledge of marine science and conservation.
First Aid/CPR Certification required.
Basic knowledge of water quality testing kits, beach transects tools, plankton tow, microscopes, comfortable using microphones, TV/DVD players.
Familiarity with MS Office Programs; Word, Excel, Outlook.

Education:
Required: Completed High School and Must be 18 years of age or older.
Desired: College courses in Education, Child Development, Recreation, Environmental Science and Biology.

Working Conditions:
Flexible schedule required, few weekend days, evening and overnights.
Must be able to spend long periods of times outdoors during all weather conditions (extreme heat or rain)
Must be able to sit, stand walk, run for varied and extended periods of time while interacting with children and teens.
Heavy to moderate vocal demands to project talks and announcements to direct a large audience in loud areas during heavy foot and vehicle traffic.
Ability to lift at least 30lbs

Salary and Benefits: $16.50, 40 hours per week for a maximum of 8 weeks.
