Internships Available with NBIS The Network for Business Innovation & Sustainability

The following internship opportunities are available now and can continue throughout the remainder of the academic year. There is the possibility of extension of the internships over the summer.
Background: NBIS, the Network for Business Innovation and Sustainability is the Northwest non-profit dedicated to enabling professionals and businesses in driving profitable sustainability. NBIS delivers expertise, education, and partnership opportunities to help businesses and professionals advance their organizations in environmentally, socially and economically sustainable ways advancing the “triple bottom line”.
Our programs include seminars and educational events that highlight innovative companies and best practices, networking events that bring like-minded people together across industries, and strategic sustainability planning and implementation services to accelerate sustainability within businesses and organizations. Internship Opportunities:
 
By-Product Synergy NW: Pioneering innovation, economic development and waste reduction strategies for the Puget Sound region. NBIS is the managing partner for the By-Product Synergy NW project, with additional project and technical support provided by the WA Department of Ecology, Pollution Prevention Resource Center, Impact Washington, Washington State University and others. Member companies meet quarterly with a goal of finding innovative uses for “waste” materials and developing leadership in sustainability best practices among member companies. The project is in its fourth year. Role of the intern: One or more interns will be involved in the following activities, to be further defined in conversation: member meeting support, helping to plan and providing logistical support and outreach activities for annual Community Synergy Event(s), providing innovative leadership on project and synergy development, materials working groups, participating in recruitment efforts for expansion of the project. NBIS is launching a Materials Innovation Exchange website and the intern(s) will have an exciting opportunity to help launch this web-based exchange and materials management resource.
NBIS also has opportunities for students wishing a more limited role -- this involves staffing a materials working group and providing research and coordination support to identifying synergy opportunities among participating companies and in the region. Working group meetings will be scheduled monthly.
Skills and Requirements: Excellent communication skills; strong time management and workload management skills; knowledge of corporate culture and experience communicating with business leaders at all levels of management; data management and process skills a plus. NBIS Salmon-Safe Urban Initiative: NBIS’ Salmon-Safe outreach program recognizes corporate and institutional land owners whose storm water and landscape management practices help protect salmon and stream habitat, reduce pollutants entering the watersheds of Puget Sound, and conserve water. The Urban Initiative involves outreach to business and property owners to introduce Salmon-Safe, arranging for assessments that are conducted by Salmon-Safe, Inc., project management of assessments and creating educational and recognition events. This internship is an exciting opportunity to engage directly with business and property owners on behalf of Salmon-Safe and regional issues of watershed preservation. Role of the intern: The intern works with NBIS Co-Directors to conduct outreach to companies and property owners in targeted areas and industries. Responsibilities include setting up informational meetings with business leaders and conducting follow-up; scheduling talks and presentations with chambers of commerce and other business groups; collaborating on the planning and carrying out of recognition activities; maintaining outreach and impact tracking records. Skills and Requirements: Excellent communication skills; knowledge of corporate culture and experience communicating with business leaders at all levels of management; strong time management and workload management skills; data management skills, word & Excel; self starter with good collaboration skills; event management experience a plus. NBIS Non-Profit Leadership
This internship is ideal for students interested in non-profit leadership and program management. Provide program support for the goals of the organization in expanding membership, strengthening programming and participation and support systems for management and fundraising. Activities can include:
Program development and support – Eco-Hours, GreenBag Lunch and Grassroots Sustainability Leaders Roundtable.
 Membership Development and support of membership tracking, outreach and benefit services
Fundraising - supporting Board committee for marketing and communications and developing fundraising programs and activities.

Location of Work:
NBIS combines telecommuting with work at the NBIS Pioneer Square office at 314 1st Avenue S, Seattle.
Interns should have and be willing to use their own laptops.
